At RawLove Superfoods, we believe in the power of sinking your teeth into something deliciously sweet and creamy. There’s nothing quite like treating yourself to food that just makes you feel good. We also believe enjoyment and nourishment aren’t mutually exclusive. That’s why every one of our handmade treats and desserts is proudly organic, raw, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free.

Whether it’s our famous mint-choc slice or one of our velvety “cheese” cakes, our food is infused with food-grade doterra essential oils and packed with nutrient-dense superfoods. Our philosophy is simple – health, vitality and well-being come from the inside out. That’s why we create food that’s nourishing for the mind, body and soul.

Owned and operated by one of Australia’s first certified raw chefs Sandra Bottrell, RawLove Superfoods first began in Sydney in 2012. Trained as a massage therapist specialising in lymphatic draining and as a holistic counsellor specialising in grief, Sandra has a detailed background in holistic health. Sandra learnt through her professional and personal experiences that trying to maintain a healthy and healing lifestyle can be isolating, especially when it comes to food. After suffering through illness and embarking on a journey back to health, Sandra discovered finding nutritious treats and desserts was near-impossible.

This discovery, along with her years of experience in the holistic health industry, sparked Sandra’s desire to bridge the gap between health, nutrition and enjoying life and food to the fullest. Sandra wanted to create desserts that take the traditional tastes and flavours we all know and love and transform them into treats, and we can feel good about eating long after they’re gone. And with that ethos in mind, RawLove Superfoods was born. Now located in Melbourne, Sandra and her team of dedicated chefs supply their handcrafted products to cafes and health food stores in Victoria and throughout New South Wales.

Whether you’re a raw food devotee, dabbler or simply want to try something new and to nurture, RawLove Superfoods welcomes you. Join in today by visiting our Brighton East location, book into one of our classes, try one of our cakes for your next special occasion or visit one of our proud retailers.

What does a wedding cake signify?

The wedding cake is a celebratory creation decorated with flowers. It’s pretty and delicious, but is it just cake? Or does it signify something more? From a simple cutting cake to a breathtaking five-tiered one, a cake’s design may not be as arbitrary as you think. Keep reading to learn about this confection history, the significance of cake cutting, and wedding cake traditions.

A gorgeous wedding cake is often the centrepiece of a wedding and typically sits in a place of honour at the reception. This carefully planned confection is a longstanding tradition dating back to Roman and Medieval times.

Back then, a stack of buns was used instead of a multi-level culinary masterpiece, but the symbolism was generally the same. Over the centuries, there have been many traditions created surrounding the cake, and it still remains an important aspect of any wedding.

It’s important to take the time to plan a cake that reflects the couple and keep in mind all the various customs created around wedding cakes.

Wedding Cake Traditions and Facts

The Cake Symbolises Prosperity, Good Luck and Fertility

The wedding cake symbolises prosperity, good luck and fertility and is made of the best ingredients available so that the marriage will be long lasting, happy and with many offspring.

Three Tiers

Traditionally, the wedding cake at three tiers. The bottom one was served during the ceremony, while the middle tier was offered after. The bride and groom would save the top-tier for their first child christening. It was not uncommon for the first child to be born a few months after the wedding in the old days. Some couples still follow this tradition and freeze their top-tier (or a slice of it) to eat it on their first wedding anniversary.

Nowadays, wedding cakes have from 3 to 7 layers depending on your preference and budget. If you decide to distribute the cake during the dinner, you will need about three tiers for a small wedding (up to 100 guests), while a larger reception hosting 200+ people will require at least 5 tiers of goodness. Please make sure you discuss your details with your baker.

Kiss Over the Cake for a Long Marriage

The three tiers will be stacked in the bride and groom in the middle ages with a kiss over the cake. If they could do it without damaging the cake, they would have a long and happy marriage.

Current Cake Style Was Invented In London

In the 18th century, Thomas Rich, a chef in London, England, created a new style of wedding cake, taking inspiration after the steeple of St. Bride’s Church.

Luxe, Status and Celebration Symbol

Originally, the cake was made of fruit, and the white icing was expensive and very sought after. Refined sugar was rare, and only rich brides and grooms could afford a white icing, a symbol of purity and wealth. Queen Victoria wore a white dress at her wedding with Prince Albert and had a white icing cake, which was afterwards named the royal icing.

Lucky Charms

Often the single ladies were asked to pull ribbons from the bottom tier of the cake. One of them would have a ring attached, and tradition said that the happy maiden would the next one to get married.

Two Cakes Instead of One

Originally, the bride and the groom had each cake. Generally, the groom’s cake was made of chocolate because the dark colour symbolised masculinity. The bride’s cake was covered in white icing to symbolise purity.

The bride’s cake would be served during dinner while the groom would slice and distributed as favours.

Wedding Toppers

Modern wedding cakes feature toppers. They are usually porcelain or sometimes Lego figurines, often funny like the one in the image above. Often the bride and groom will use the topper as a Christmas ornament.

Cutting the Cake

Along with the first dance, grand entrance, ring exchange and first kiss, cutting the cake is a photo opportunity and a major moment of the special event. Professional wedding photographers know they have to take a good photo of the couple cutting the cake as their first endeavour. I usually take a detail shot of the hands (the bride’s hand featuring the rings on top) and a good shot of the couple while cutting the cake.

Feeding the Cake

Once the couple cuts the cake, it is time to feed each other a slice or more cake. I absolutely love this opportunity to take some great candid shots of the bride and groom having fun. I typically ask them to feed each other two slices as the first time they are more formal, and once they know we have the photos “in the bag,” they become more playful. Typically, the second round of photos makes it into the wedding album as the emotions are more genuine.

Originally, it was the bride who cut the cake as a symbol of her losing her purity…

In the past, brides would receive the cake at their home, take a bite and throw the rest of the slice over their head to symbolise a prosperous life. A somewhat similar custom was documented in Rome where the groom would break bread over the bride’s head to symbolise prosperity and fertility.

Many couples take advantage of this moment to smash the cake into each other’s face, which often leads to interesting photos. Sadly, the dress is usually ruined, and even the groom’s tux. Fortunately, the event takes place at the end of the dinner, followed only by the party.

Sleeping With a Piece of Cake Under the Pillow

In the 1700s, maidens would sleep with the piece of cake under their pillow to dream of their future husband. Similar beliefs include maidens sleeping with a piece of cake in their left stocking.

Types of Wedding Cakes

Over time wedding cakes evolved, and depending on the country and culture, we know of traditional cakes (white), cupcakes, frosted cakes and fruit cakes. In addition, we can classify cakes based on flavours, and sometimes different tiers are chocolate, carrot, Italian Cream, Italian rum, mint, etc.

Croquembouche in France, Sponge Cake in Germany

In France, the wedding cake is made of profiteroles (pastries filled with cream) stacked in a tower and decorated with flowers, almonds, ribbons and caramel drizzle or chocolate. As a side note, “Croque en bouche” means it cracks in your mouth.

In Germany, the couples enjoy a sponge cake with jam, liqueurs, marzipan and frosted in chocolate or fondant.

As a side note, the French and Germans always use natural colours.

Sugar Flowers thanks to Sylvia Weinstock

In the 70s, Sylvia Weinstock started lavishly decorating wedding cakes, and she becomes an icon of the cake industry in New York and then worldwide. She is often referred to as “the Queen of Cakes”, and among her clients, we can list Donald Trump, Mariah Carey, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and many more.

European Countries Have Different Cakes and Traditions

There are a few different cakes in various European countries. For example, in Sweden and Hungary, traditionally, the bride and groom would eat a spettekaka and kurtoskalacs (a conical cake). The Lithuanians have the sakotis, a dough formed into a tree, and a similar cake in Poland and Germany.

Wedding Cake History & Wedding Cake Origin

The wedding cake has been a part of the ceremony since the ancient Greeks and Romans. As part of the nuptials, the groom broke bread over the bride’s head. This was to symbolise her submission, the end of her purity, and to represent good luck and fertility.

During the Middle Ages, a new take on wedding cake began. The newer approach included cakes that were high-stacked, and the newlyweds would kiss over it. If they were successful in kissing without knocking the cake over, then it was believed that they would be blessed with many children.

Taking the goal of the bride’s fertility a step further, the English decided that child-bearing would be best increased by throwing the cake at the bride.

The Icing on the Cake

Originally wedding cakes were not the iced confections of today. They were often plain and similar to today’s fruitcakes. However, by the 17th century and on into the 18th, sugar started to be more affordable, and white icing began being used as -not surprisingly- a symbol of the bride’s virginity as well as an indicator of the wealth of the bride’s family. Later on, having colour added to the icing and having tiered cakes and elaborate designs indicated even greater affluence and social status. The symbolism of the couple feeding each other is to show others that they promise to look out for each other forever.

Cutting the Wedding Cake

Originally, the wedding cake was intended to be passed out to wedding guests by only the bride to ensure fertility. However, as weddings began to be larger events, this became a task for both the bride and groom. In time, the cake cutting ceremony began. The symbolism is that the hand of the groom is placed over that of the bride’s to show his support and as a promise to take care of her and their future. The couple was encouraged to cut from the bottom tier as a reminder of the relationship’s longevity. As for the attendees, having cake after the couple has cut is believed to bring good luck.

So, whether you choose to have a single wedding cake, a plethora of cupcakes or perhaps a variety of cakes served at your wedding, now you know why that delightfully decorated item is essential.
